It’s a crying shame that there was no Bobby to be heard but honestly it gives you a different perspective of some of the songs in an odd way. I know

there’s a lot of background things going on in this show, but purely based on music, the first half is so funky and honestly i really like it. That Peggy-O is one of my favourites. Definitely doesn’t deserve the hate it’s gotten.

Another somewhat lackluster performance is saved by a few rather compelling passages. An unspectacular first set climaxes with a well played but dark and

edgey 17 minute performance of Eyes of the World that features a thrashing Garcia solo and some sinister Lesh ordinance, prior to an eerie segue into China Doll. Not that it's my thing, but the Phil and Ned segment, with participation from Garcia, just might be the best ever Seastones ever performed. The following Playin' in the Band (with Lagin sitting in), is one of the highlights of the tour (in spite of some horrendous vocals by Donna). It's an epic performance of the song, that includes two drum breaks. Ned Lagin sits in for the remainder of the performance that features a 17 minute performance of Morning Dew. Several reviewers that I respect have given this show rather strong reviews. In deference to them I'll give this a score of 91 pts, but I'm thinking this is too generous. (91 pts)

in this one. Not the best of the year by any means, but a very satisfying version, if you can dig a more mellow, Garcia driven performance. There are some other nice cuts too, like Deal, however, i wouldn't call any show from this tour (9/18 being the exception) great exactly. Morning Dew is a train-wreck. stick with winterland 2/22-24 and May-August for the best of '74...

SBD tapes were usually sound reinforcement mixes.
The thing you need to understand is that, unless they were recording for a live album, the sbd mix wasn't meant to be used for later listening - it was
...
used to reinforce the sound of the PA and properly mix the sound in the hall for the audience. Therefore if Weir was louder on stage he would be quieter on the sbd feed and vice versa. Unless a mix specifically meant for later listening was created then most sbd tapes will be far from perfect recordings. That's why the Betty boards sound so good - she was using a seperate mix she made just for recording.

form of music. My only critizism is where the FUCK is Wier. The mix is not good, as a previous reviewer stated Jerry L Phil R cool but WHERE THE FUCK IS THE RYTHM guitar. I think Healy should take note (if he is the mixer iam going by what the earlier guy said) that historically its kinda fucked up. Anyway; ironically i enjoy this because as a result of the Wier Ghost phenom. it kinda sounds like Phil and Jerry playing in someone's basement just for the fuck of it. Worth a few listens, sorry for th low score but I tend to enjoy The Grateful Dead with all members included. (Even Wier).

the exact year & pin it down. Anyway, this is worth listening to regardless of what your favorite year is. Everyone is clearly heard---especially Phil. Morning Dew seemed to have a kinda shaky start, but turned into a head blaster. I LOVE the last third of the song where Jerry comes in so quiet and builds up to the explosion that Moring Dew can sometimes end with. 5 STARS for sound & the show. And remmeber, it's ALL in how the music makes YOU FEEL!!!
